Harry Potter is one of the most popular and beloved fantasy film franchises of all time. Based on the bestselling novels by J.K. Rowling, the series chronicles the adventures of the young wizard Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger as they attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and face the evil Lord Voldemort. With its magical world, compelling characters, and epic storyline, it’s no wonder Harry Potter remains so popular with both kids and adults.
The Harry Potter film series consists of eight movies in total. The first seven films adapt the seven original Harry Potter books, while the eighth movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is the first installment in a series of prequels. The original seven Harry Potter films are:
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010)
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011)
With the entire Harry Potter series available to stream, fans can relive the magic and adventure anytime. But can you actually find all 7 Harry Potter movies on Netflix?
Are the Harry Potter movies on Netflix?
Unfortunately, not all 7 Harry Potter movies are currently available to stream on Netflix. In fact, as of October 2022, Netflix only has 4 of the 8 Harry Potter universe films in their library.
The 4 Harry Potter movies you can find on Netflix right now are:
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
So while you can watch the first 4 Harry Potter movies on Netflix, the second half of the series – Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and the Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 – are not currently available.
Why aren’t all the Harry Potter movies on Netflix?
There are a few reasons why you can’t stream all the Harry Potter movies on Netflix right now:
- Netflix doesn’t have an ongoing deal to host the full Harry Potter library. Their current license only includes the first 4 films.
- The streaming rights for the Harry Potter movies are split across different services. For example, Peacock currently has the rights to Order of the Phoenix.
- HBO Max won the exclusive rights to host the entire Wizarding World franchise, including Fantastic Beasts. So the Harry Potter movies rotate between services.
Basically, Netflix has to renegotiate the streaming licenses for each Harry Potter movie periodically. So what films are available tends to vary as the rights expire and switch between platforms. It just happens that right now, Netflix only has the first 4 films.
When will the other Harry Potter movies be on Netflix?
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee if or when the remaining Harry Potter movies will be back on Netflix. It all depends on whether Netflix renews the licensing agreement with Warner Bros to host the rest of the series.
The good news is that the movies tend to rotate between different streaming platforms, so it’s likely Netflix will regain the rights at some point down the line. For example, in 2021 Netflix hosted the first 6 Harry Potter movies for several months before losing them again.
So keep an eye out – the Harry Potter movies you can’t currently find on Netflix may very well return to the platform in the future! We’ll just have to wait for any new licensing deals to be announced.
Where to stream all the Harry Potter movies
Since not every Harry Potter movie is on Netflix, where can you find the full series available for streaming? Here are a few options:
- HBO Max – This streaming service has an ongoing deal with Warner Bros to be the exclusive home of the Wizarding World movies. So you can currently find all 8 Harry Potter universe films here, including the Fantastic Beasts prequel.
- Peacock – NBCUniversal’s streaming platform hosts a rotating selection of Harry Potter movies. Right now you can stream Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and both Deathly Hallows films.
- Amazon Prime Video – Prime members can purchase each Harry Potter movie individually, or the full 8-film collection. So this is an à la carte option if you want to own them digitally.
- Apple TV – Similar to Amazon, you can buy the Harry Potter movies one by one or as a bundle on Apple TV. This gives you unlimited on-demand access.
Physical media like Blu-ray or DVD is also an option if you don’t mind owning hard copies. And of course, you can always rent or purchase the films from online stores like Amazon, Apple TV, Youtube or Google Play.
How to have a Harry Potter movie marathon
If you want to relive the entire Harry Potter saga from beginning to end, a movie marathon is perfect! Here are some tips for the ultimate Harry Potter binge-watching experience:

- Plan for a full day – At over 19 hours runtime, be prepared to spend a full day immersed in the Harry Potter world.
- Create Hogwarts ambience – Dim the lights, decorate with Hogwarts banners, hang floating candles, etc.
