As the city prepares for the arrival of loved ones’ souls, the air is filled with the vibrant yellow hue of marigold flowers days before November 1st. Families meticulously craft elaborate altars in their homes, adorning them with cherished photographs, flickering candles, and delectable treats to beckon the spirits. The atmosphere is one of reverence and nostalgia as they share stories and memories of their dearly departed.As night falls on October 31st, November 1st, and 2nd, Oaxacans gather at cemeteries, where candlelit gravestones are adorned with marigolds to guide the souls back home. Visitors can respectfully witness this poignant celebration by visiting the cemetery in Xoxocotlán, also known as Xoxo (pronounced ho-oh). When taking photos within the cemetery walls, it’s essential to approach with respect and ask permission before capturing images of individuals.A little-known secret is that purchasing a bundle of marigold flowers, or cempasuchil, outside the cemetery allows you to thoughtfully adorn gravesites without existing decorations or visitors. This small act can be a meaningful way to connect with the Oaxacans’ traditions and pay homage to their loved ones.
Guelaguetza Festival
The Guelaguetza Festival in Oaxaca’s capital is another cultural heritage celebration where stunning photography opportunities abound. Every July, the Central Valleys welcome groups from across the state to participate in this vibrant event.
At its heart, the festival honors the diversity of Oaxaca and its 16 indigenous groups through a reciprocal exchange, as implied by the name ‘Guelaguetza’, which means offering. For an entire month, parades, tastings, and dances showcase the distinct attire and cultural traditions of each region, allowing attendees to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of Oaxaca.
Wedding Parade
While Oaxaca’s vibrant festival scene is certainly a highlight of any trip, you don’t need to time your visit around a specific celebration to experience the city’s festive atmosphere. In fact, the daily life in Oaxaca is filled with parades, and one of the most charming and Instagram-worthy ones is the wedding procession that takes place every Friday and Saturday afternoon outside Santo Domingo Church.
As the ceremony comes to an end, the newlyweds are greeted by a lively parade that makes its way down Alcalá Street. The procession typically lasts about 20 minutes, during which time you can grab your camera and capture some unique shots of the happy couple, their friends and family, and even the giant puppets that lead the parade.
