Thailand, renowned for its breathtaking tropical beaches with vibrant turquoise waters, sizzling culinary scene, majestic royal palaces, ancient temples, and ruins, has long been a magnet for travelers. My recent 9-day journey in mid-September was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to delve into the country’s rich cultural heritage and indulge in its mouth-watering cuisine.
Bangkok
Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, often serves as the initial destination for travelers embarking on an adventure to this captivating country. This bustling metropolis is renowned for its rich history, cultural landmarks, and lively nightlife, offering a unique blend of traditional and modern experiences. As I had the pleasure of discovering firsthand, Bangkok is indeed a city that will leave you with cherished memories. The city’s culinary scene is a major highlight, featuring an incredible array of flavors and aromas that will tantalize your taste buds. Moreover, the locals are warm-hearted and welcoming, making visitors feel at ease as they explore the city’s bustling streets. While I was in Bangkok, I had the opportunity to indulge in the local culture and soak up the atmosphere during my first and last days in the city.
Bangkok Chinatown
Bangkok’s Chinatown is a treasure trove of culinary delights, attracting thousands of visitors daily. The district is renowned for its vibrant street-side cuisine, featuring an array of restaurants, market stalls, and shops that showcase the city’s rich cultural heritage. If you’re visiting Thailand during Chinese New Year, you’ll witness Chinatown in all its glory, with colorful decorations and festivities filling the air. While exploring this bustling neighborhood, be sure to stop by MBK, where you can find unique souvenirs at affordable prices – I scored two pairs of pants for just $5, a true bargain! Make Chinatown a must-visit destination on your Thailand itinerary.
Klong Canal Tour
A trip along Bangkok’s canals, or Klongs, is an absolute must when visiting this vibrant city. This unique experience offers a glimpse into a way of life that’s distinct from the bustling streets and markets. I found it to be a truly enjoyable and rejuvenating adventure, with the added bonus of spotting numerous catfish swimming in the water during our tour.
Wat Suthat
Wat Suthat Thepphawararam Buddhist temple is a royal temple of the first grade, and one of Bangkok’s esteemed ten such establishments. Its stunning architecture, teeming with vibrant colors and intricate details, makes it an ideal setting for capturing breathtaking photographs.
As I wandered through its hallowed halls, I was deeply moved by the history and significance surrounding this magnificent structure. Visiting temples in Thailand requires a certain level of respect, which means covering one’s knees (no shorts or short dresses) and shoulders to ensure a dignified and respectful experience.
Tuk Tuk Food Tour
Experience the vibrant flavors of Bangkok’s culinary scene by hopping onto a three-wheeled Tuk Tuk, a colorful taxi that has its roots in traditional rickshaws. This mode of transportation is a favorite among both locals and tourists, offering an exhilarating way to navigate the city and discover its hidden gems – namely, its mouth-watering local eateries. A trip to Bangkok wouldn’t be complete without a ride on a Tuk Tuk, which has become an iconic symbol of Thailand’s capital. As you zip through the streets, take in the sights, sounds, and aromas of the city, and get ready to indulge in a culinary adventure that will leave you craving for more.
Bangkok Eats
If time allows, be sure to explore some of the area’s culinary delights during your stay. For instance, Harmonique stands out for its distinct ambiance and delectable Thai cuisine, offering a truly unique dining experience. Alternatively, Mezzaluna, a renowned Michelin-starred establishment, serves up exquisite dishes while presenting breathtaking views of the city – a perfect combination to elevate your meal.
Where I Stayed in Bangkok
During my trip, I had the pleasure of staying at two distinct hotels, one on each leg of my journey. The first, Hotel Muse Bangkok Langsuan, is a five-star establishment that truly embodies luxury. My room was spacious and elegantly appointed with meticulous attention to detail. Notable features included an antique claw-foot tub and personalized pillowcases bearing my initials. For a more immersive experience, I encourage you to watch my vlog for a firsthand look.
My second hotel stay took me to the iconic Lebua Hotel in Bangkok, which has the distinction of being the filming location for Hangover 2. The views from this hotel are truly breathtaking, and I highly recommend exploring the rooftop bar for a unique perspective.
Sukhothai
Sukhothai Province, a mere hour’s flight from Bangkok, beckons with its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. Our journey began with a seamless flight courtesy of Bangkok Airways. This charming province is home to a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the threads of history intertwine with Thailand’s exceptional culture. The locals’ genuine warmth will envelop you, while the culinary delights will tantalize your taste buds. Sukhothai’s Organic Farm
Sukhothai is not just about exploring ancient ruins, but also about immersing yourself in authentic Thai experiences. One such experience is a visit to the Organic Farm, where you can roll up your sleeves and participate in traditional farm activities alongside the locals. As you work the land, get a taste of the region’s rich agricultural heritage. After all that hard work, refuel with a delicious lunch at the on-site restaurant, which prides itself on using only the freshest produce from the very same farm. The Organic Farm is just one part of the larger Bangkok Airways’ empire, which also includes Sukhothai Airport and various hotels in the area.
Orchid Farm
As you step into the orchid farm, be prepared to be mesmerized by over 100,000 exotic species that burst forth in a kaleidoscope of colors. The real treat lies not just in admiring these stunning blooms, but also in experiencing the unique opportunity to pedal around the farm and adjacent rice paddies on a leisurely cycle ride. As I gaze upon this vibrant landscape, I’m left wondering – what secrets do orchids hold that could help me coax similar beauty into my own backyard? 😊
Sukhothai Historical Park
As you explore Sukhothai Historical Park, uncover the secrets of this ancient civilization by cycling through the site. This renowned attraction is home to the ruins of Sukhothai – Dawn of Happiness, which translates to English as the former capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom in Northern Thailand during the 13th and 14th centuries. The well-preserved historic monuments and ruins provide a breathtaking backdrop for Instagram-worthy moments. My personal highlight was cycling through the park early in the morning when the crowds were minimal, allowing us to fully appreciate the serene atmosphere.
Where I Stayed in Sukhothai
During my stay at Sukhothai Heritage Resort, I was impressed by the luxurious amenities on offer. The resort’s guest rooms and suites were tastefully designed in traditional Thai style, providing a unique and authentic experience. Guests can unwind with a rejuvenating traditional Thai massage or take a dip in one of the two swimming pools. Additional perks include bike rentals, a library, the Lotus Restaurant, and Vanda Bar, catering to a range of preferences. I was particularly enamored with the pool area, wishing I had a full day to lounge and soak up the serene atmosphere. The hotel’s location is also highly convenient, situated near the airport, farm, and central to the surrounding area, making it an ideal base for exploring.
Chiang Mai
As you embark on the 4-hour drive from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai, consider making a pit stop in Lampang, affectionately known as ‘The City of the Rooster.’ This charming town is home to the magnificent Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, a 13th-century Buddhist temple that embodies the quintessential Lanna style architecture. The 1.5-hour ride from Lampang will bring you to Chiang Mai, the largest city in Northern Thailand, situated on both sides of the Ping River and approximately 700 kilometers (435 miles) north of Bangkok. With the country’s highest mountains nearby, Chiang Mai presents an array of picturesque backdrops throughout the year. The city is renowned for its over 300 ornate Buddhist temples, so be sure to visit at least a few. Additionally, explore the local food market and indulge in a Thai cooking class to fully immerse yourself in the city’s vibrant culture.
Patara Elephant Farm
When exploring Thailand, a visit to the Patara Elephant Farm is an absolute must. This facility provides a variety of engaging experiences and informative sessions that will leave you enamored with these majestic creatures. Don’t forget to pack a few zip-lock plastic bags to protect your phone and wallet from unexpected splashes during the elephant encounter! As you immerse yourself in this unique experience, you may also enjoy exploring other aspects of Thai culture, such as its vibrant food scene or discovering the perfect place to stay. Alternatively, you might consider venturing beyond Thailand’s borders to destinations like Mexico’s Puebla and Mazatlan or the enchanting Islands of Tahiti.
Where I Stayed in Chiang Mai
I spent my time at the Dusit D2 Resort in Chiang Mai, which turned out to be an absolute gem. Its location was ideal – just a short walk from the main shopping areas. The hotel’s crowning glory, however, was its rooftop gym, which I took full advantage of during our two-day stay. Regular exercise is an excellent way to combat jet lag, and after my grueling experience on this trip, it was just what I needed.
Wat Phra Thai Doi Suthep
As you approach the revered temple, consider making an offering to honor its sacredness. This ancient structure is not only a testament to Chiang Mai’s rich cultural heritage but also a must-visit experience. To fully immerse yourself in local culture, take the opportunity to visit a traditional Thai family home and participate in a cooking class, where you can learn the intricacies of beloved dishes. When exploring temples throughout Thailand, remember to respect local customs by covering your shoulders and legs. Additionally, be prepared to remove your shoes upon entry, although wearing socks is an acceptable alternative to walking barefoot.
Thai for a Day
The most unforgettable aspect of my trip to Thailand was the opportunity to immerse myself in the daily routines of a local family through the Thai for a Day experience, courtesy of a warm-hearted Lanna family. This unique encounter allowed me to explore their picturesque garden and participate in a cooking class, providing an intimate glimpse into their way of life.
Thailand Travel Tips
In Thailand, the official currency is the baht, which is widely accepted by main banks, hotels, restaurants, and shops. While major credit cards are generally accepted, it’s recommended to use cash when shopping at local markets or side-street stalls as prices can be negotiated for a great deal on souvenirs. For added convenience, visitors can exchange their currency at airports like Bangkok or Chiang Mai, making it an ideal location to grab some cash before starting your trip. As this post was sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Canada, I’d like to extend my gratitude to them for supporting my travel endeavors and allowing me to share my experiences with you.
