What happens when the Holy Spirit enters your life?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity in Christian theology. When someone accepts Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within that person. This indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a profound and life-changing experience. The presence of the Holy Spirit brings power, renewal, and transformation into the believer’s life.

The Holy Spirit Brings New Life

One of the first things that happens when the Holy Spirit enters a person’s life is that they become spiritually regenerated. The Bible says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The old sinful nature is replaced with a new holy nature that desires to please God. This regeneration is entirely a work of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).

The indwelling Holy Spirit begins the process of sanctification in the life of a believer. Sanctification is the continuing transformation into the likeness of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Holy Spirit gives the believer spiritual power to resist sin and walk in obedience to God’s commands. Without the Holy Spirit’s presence, overcoming sin and living a godly life is impossible.

The Holy Spirit Produces Spiritual Fruit

As the Holy Spirit works within a believer, He begins to produce spiritual fruit in their life. The Bible describes the fruit of the Spirit this way: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23). Rather than living with selfish motivations, a believer starts manifesting these Christlike virtues.

The fruit of the Spirit is often accompanied by spiritual gifts as well. The Holy Spirit gives supernatural abilities to believers for the purpose of building up the church. These include gifts like teaching, prophecy, healing, tongues, and discernment. The gifts provide power for ministry and effectiveness in advancing the Kingdom of God.

The Holy Spirit Facilitates a Deeper Prayer Life

For believers in Jesus, prayer is essential to maintaining a close relationship with God. The indwelling Holy Spirit plays a huge role in helping Christians have a vibrant prayer life. Romans 8:26-27 says “…the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”

The Holy Spirit gives divine power and motivation to pray. He intercedes on our behalf, bringing our prayers into alignment with God’s will. As we yield to the Spirit’s leading in prayer, He helps us pray powerfully and effectively.

Ways the Holy Spirit Facilitates Prayer:

  • Gives us a burden to pray for specific things
  • Brings scriptures to mind to help direct our prayer
  • Stirs our hearts to cry out to God
  • Gives us assurance that God hears us
  • Helps us pray according to God’s will

The Holy Spirit Guides Us into Truth

In John 16:13 Jesus told His disciples “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth”. A major role of the Holy Spirit is to reveal truth to believers and guide them into a right understanding of God’s Word. The Bible cannot be rightly understood apart from the Holy Spirit’s illumination.

1 Corinthians 2:12-14 explains “What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit makes its teachings clear to us. He convinces us of the truth and helps apply it effectively to our lives.

Ways the Holy Spirit Guides us into Truth:

  • Illuminates scripture so we can understand it
  • Brings conviction of sin
  • Reveals areas that need change
  • Helps us discern truth from falsehood
  • Shows how scripture applies to our lives

The Holy Spirit Provides Comfort and Hope

Jesus called the Holy Spirit the “Comforter” who empowers Christians to live obediently even in the midst of suffering. The Bible says the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26). He comforts us in affliction and encourages our hearts to keep trusting in Jesus.

The hope produced by the Holy Spirit is described in Romans 15:13 – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” This supernatural hope gives us confidence that God is working all things for our good.

The indwelling Holy Spirit reassures believers that they are loved children of God. He confirms their adoption into God’s family and gives them a foretaste of their future heavenly inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14). This fills believers with joy and peace even in the midst of suffering.

Ways the Holy Spirit Provides Comfort and Hope:

  • Encourages us in difficult times
  • Reminds us of God’s promises
  • Gives us confidence that God is in control
  • Fills us with joy and peace
  • Reassures us of God’s love

The Holy Spirit Unifies Believers

The Holy Spirit establishes a remarkable unity between believers. When people receive the Holy Spirit they become members of the universal church – the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). Though from many diverse backgrounds, the Holy Spirit joins Christians together in love.

Ephesians 4:3 instructs believers to “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” The Holy Spirit produces a harmony and common purpose among believers. As the church submits to the Spirit’s guidance, He causes the Body of Christ to build itself up in love (Ephesians 4:16).

Even when disagreements occur, the Holy Spirit enables believers to resolve conflict in a Biblical manner, maintain unity, and bring glory to God. This kind of supernatural unity among such a diverse group of people is only possible through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Ways the Holy Spirit Unifies Believers:

  • Makes us members of God’s family
  • Gives us love for one another
  • Brings harmony in relationships
  • Enables unity despite differences
  • Causes spiritual growth in the church

The Holy Spirit Empowers Our Witness

The greatest work of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Jesus Christ through the empowerment of believers’ witness. In Acts 1:8 Jesus told His followers “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” The Holy Spirit equips Christians with spiritual boldness to spread the gospel and lead others to faith in Christ.

The early church experienced this powerful witness firsthand. Acts 4:31 says “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.” Empowered by the Spirit, the church saw explosive growth despite intense persecution.

Every Christian has the privilege of being used by God to impact the world for eternity. The Holy Spirit develops our spiritual gifts and works through us to make Jesus known. He gives ordinary believers the extraordinary power to advance the Kingdom of God.

Ways the Holy Spirit Empowers Our Witness:

  • Gives us boldness to share the gospel
  • Provides divine appointments to minister to others
  • Works spiritual gifts through us
  • Speaks through us by giving words to say
  • Helps us testify about what God has done

The Holy Spirit Transforms Our Character

The Bible says God’s ultimate purpose is for believers to “be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29). The Holy Spirit is the agent that brings about this transformation. As we yield to Him, the Holy Spirit shapes our character to become more and more like Jesus.

2 Corinthians 3:18 says “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” Our part is to fix our eyes on Jesus through prayer, worship, and Bible study. The Spirit then molds us into Christ’s image.

The Holy Spirit works to form the character of Christ in believers. He develops virtue, integrity, humility, righteousness, and obedience to God’s commands. This lifelong process of sanctification leads to increasing spiritual maturity.

Ways the Holy Spirit Transforms Character:

  • Reveals sinful areas that need change
  • Develops Christlike virtues in our lives
  • Gives power to overcome temptation
  • Produces spiritual maturity and wisdom
  • Causes us to walk in obedience to God

Conclusion

The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is the greatest gift a believer can have this side of eternity. The Spirit’s work encompasses all aspects of Christian life: new birth, growth in grace, power to witness, guidance into truth, comfort, unifying the church, and Christlike character. There is no part of the Christian experience where the Holy Spirit is not actively involved and essential.

All believers have the privilege of living life under the direction, empowerment, and grace of the Holy Spirit. As we submit ourselves daily to the Spirit’s control and rely on His strength to obey God’s Word, we will experience the joyful and victorious Christian life that God intends.
