What is the 4th dimension in the Bible?

The concept of a 4th dimension originates from mathematics and physics. In the Bible, there are some verses which allude to the existence of higher dimensions beyond the normal 3 physical dimensions of length, width, and height. While the Bible does not explicitly mention a “4th dimension”, some theologians have interpreted certain passages as hinting at the existence of higher spatial dimensions that are beyond our normal comprehension.

The higher dimensions of God

One of the key ideas around the 4th dimension in the Bible is that God exists in higher dimensions beyond our 3-dimensional world. There are several verses which suggest that God transcends our normal conception of space and time:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

This verse implies that God’s thoughts and ways are so much higher than ours, like the heavens are higher than the earth. This suggests that God exists in a realm of higher dimensionality compared to our limited 3D world.

“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this temple which I have built!” (1 Kings 8:27)

This verse directly states that even the highest heavens cannot contain God, meaning God’s existence completely transcends the physical universe as we know it. This points to the existence of higher dimensions that our universe, including what we perceive as “heaven”, cannot contain.

Jesus is from a higher dimension

Several verses in the New Testament also suggest that Jesus originated from a higher dimension before coming to Earth:

“No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.” (John 3:13)

This verse affirms that Jesus descended from heaven to Earth. This suggests He came from a higher dimensional plane of existence beyond our 3D world before taking human form on Earth.

“And no one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.” (Ephesians 4:9-10)

This verse reiterates the idea that Jesus came from heaven, a higher plane of existence, to the lower 3-dimensional Earth.

Heaven is in a higher dimension

Several verses suggest heaven itself exists in a higher dimension than our 3D universe:

“I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of it I do not know, God knows.” (2 Corinthians 12:2)

This verse refers to the “third heaven”, implying there are multiple levels of heaven of increasing dimensionality beyond the physical world.

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ…” (Philippians 3:20)

This verse states that Christian citizenship is in heaven, contrasting it with Earthly citizenship and implying heaven is a literal place that exists beyond our 3D world.

“However, as it is written: ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ – the things God has prepared for those who love him…” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

This suggests heaven is a realm beyond our conception or sensory experience, again hinting at a higher dimensional plane of existence.

Spiritual beings can access higher dimensions

Angels and spiritual beings are described as living in realms inaccessible to humans, suggesting they can access higher dimensions:

“Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.” (Matthew 4:11)

This verse implies angels can transition between higher dimensions like heaven and Earthly dimensions.

“See to it that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10)

This suggests angels live in heaven and can access higher dimensions to be in God’s presence, while also interacting with our 3D world to look after people.

“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.” (Daniel 7:13)

This vision of Daniel describes being led into the presence of the “Ancient of Days”, presumably God. This again implies angels can access higher dimensional realms while interacting with humans on Earth.

Higher dimensions in prophetic visions

Prophetic visions in the Bible are sometimes described in language suggestive of higher dimensions. While hard to fully comprehend, they give glimpses of realms beyond the 3D world:

“After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” (Revelation 4:1)

This vision describes a door to heaven opening, allowing access to higher dimensional realms where future events can be seen.

“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me were the four winds of heaven churning up the great sea.” (Daniel 7:2)

This vision references the “four winds of heaven”, hinting at a realm with possibly four spatial dimensions existing in heaven.

“Then he continued, “Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.” (Daniel 10:12)

This suggests angels can respond to events on Earth while residing in higher dimensions like heaven, able to transition between the dimensions.

Eternity in higher dimensions

A key characteristic of God is that He is eternal, existing beyond normal time. This is only possible if He resides in a higher dimension:

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

This verse emphasizes God’s eternal nature – He exists across all of time because He resides outside the normal flow of time in higher dimensions.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

This affirms Jesus’ divinity by highlighting how He is eternal like God the Father, not bound by time.

“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” (2 Peter 3:8)

This hints at how higher dimensions allow God to transcend time as we know it, living outside of our limited 3D timeline and experiencing past, present and future simultaneously.

Higher dimensions at the end times

Some end times prophecies in the Bible suggest an intersection between higher dimensions and our 3D world:

“Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…” (Revelation 21:1)

This verse points to a transformation from the old 3D world to a new reality of higher dimensions at the end times.

“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.” (1 John 3:2)

This suggests that when Christ returns, there may be an ascension for believers to higher dimensional levels where they can perceive Christ in His true higher dimensional form.

“Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.” (Daniel 12:2)

This verse hints that after physical resurrection, people may inhabit higher dimensional realms like heaven or hell which exist outside our 3D world.

Conclusion

While the Bible does not directly talk about a “4th dimension”, there are many verses suggesting the existence of higher dimensions beyond our normal 3D world. God, angels, heaven, and spiritual realms are described as transcending our universe, existing in higher spatial dimensions. Prophetic visions give glimpses of these higher dimensions. And prophecies predict an upcoming intersection between higher dimensions and our 3D world. While challenging to comprehend, these biblical ideas show the possibilities of mind-bending realms that go beyond our normal human perception.
