For those who don’t follow me on Instagram @BellaBucchiotti, let me recap my recent adventure. After 19 long months, I finally took my first trip outside of Canada and chose California as my destination. With its emphasis on responsible travel, it was the perfect spot to start exploring beyond my home border.

California offers an abundance of activities regardless of the season or time of year. From wine tastings and historic building tours to taking in the breathtaking natural beauty and embarking on scenic drives, there’s always something new to discover.

This California road trip blog post is brought to you in collaboration with Visit California.

California holds a special place in my heart as one of my favourite US destinations. With my friend Kim, aka @WestCoastLife and an exceptional photographer who captured all the stunning photos, we embarked on a road trip adventure to Sonoma, San Francisco, and Monterey to soak up the October atmosphere.

One of the most convenient ways to reach Sonoma County is by flying into a nearby airport and driving there. The Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa offers an airport shuttle service, connecting travelers from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK). Alternatively, flying into SFO may be the most suitable option, given its international connections and comprehensive network. We opted for this route, renting a car after landing to begin our northern California road trip. As a seasoned traveler, I can attest that SFO is one of my favorite airports, offering ample opportunities for exploration or layovers. In fact, Sonoma County is merely 75 miles north of SFO, a 1-hour drive away, while it’s approximately 76 miles northwest of OAK, requiring a 1.5-hour drive. For reference, Sacramento International Airport is about 119 miles west, a 2-hour drive.

Forest Bathing

Forest bathing, also known as hinrin-yoku, is a centuries-old practice that has gained popularity globally. Originating in Japan in the 1980s, it’s an integral part of preventive care and healing in traditional Japanese medicine. Unlike its literal counterpart, forest bathing isn’t about immersing oneself in water but rather embracing the serene atmosphere of the forest through a slow, mindful walk.

This meditative practice shares similarities with mindfulness-based activities like meditation and yoga, where individuals focus on their breath, body, or surroundings to cultivate inner peace. Similarly, forest bathing encourages participants to engage their senses and let go of worries while immersed in nature.

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience this unique form of therapy firsthand during a guided tour with EcoWisdom Wellness and Jenny Harrow-Keeler, a certified forest therapy guide and wine professional from Red Car Wines. Our group strolled through Zephyr farms vineyard and surrounding forest, savoring local cheeses, fruits, and Pinot Noir as part of an immersive travel experience.

As we wandered, I discovered a new appreciation for the region’s Pinot Noir, including their popular rosé. However, my personal favorite was their crisp white wine – I ended up purchasing some to enjoy at home.
