This Halloween season, treat yourself and your loved ones to a spellbinding dessert that’s sure to cast a sweet spell: no-churn, colourful birthday cake flavoured ice cream. And the best part? You don’t need an ice cream machine to conjure up this creamy concoction. This bewitching treat is one of my personal favourites, and I’m confident it will become yours too. With just a few simple ingredients, including heavy cream, sweetened condensed milk, and white cake mix, you can create this enchanting dessert with ease. To add an extra touch of whimsy, be sure to incorporate some festive Halloween colours using purple, black, green, and orange food dyes. And let’s not forget the finishing touches: a sprinkle or two of spooky-themed sprinkles will have your guests screaming for more.

How to Make Spooky Ice Cream

Transforming ordinary treats into spooky masterpieces is a cinch, especially when you whip up no-churn Halloween ice cream with ease. Simply combine heavy cream and condensed milk using a hand mixer or some good old-fashioned elbow grease, then stir in cake mix for an instant flavor boost.

Next, divide the mixture among four containers and infuse each one with a unique hue by adding different colors of gel food dye. Once you’ve achieved your desired shades, pour the mixes into a loaf pan and sprinkle some magic on top – quite literally, if you’re using festive sprinkles.

This birthday cake-flavored ice cream takes roughly four hours to set, but don’t worry about timing; it’s perfectly fine to prep ahead of time and store it in the freezer until you’re ready to serve. The end result is a delightful treat that’s sure to cast a spell on your taste buds.

What Kind of Food Dyes to Use

Regardless of the type of food coloring you choose, the key is to achieve the desired Halloween hues. For this dessert, I prefer using gel food dyes, as they offer a concentrated formula that allows for more control over the color intensity. However, if you opt for liquid colors instead, keep in mind that you’ll need to use more of it due to its lower concentration. It’s essential to add the dye gradually, as this will help you achieve the perfect shade. When it comes to black coloring, I recommend using a higher-quality dye to ensure an accurate representation of the color. Cheap alternatives might produce a dark blue hue instead of the desired black, which could be disappointing. By investing in better quality dyes, you’ll be able to create a more authentic and spooky appearance for your dessert.

Churned vs No Churn Ice Cream

No-churn ice cream has gained popularity for its ease of preparation and equally impressive taste. But what sets it apart from the traditional churning process? When you churn ice cream, air is incorporated into the mixture, resulting in a lighter and more voluminous final product.

In contrast, no-churn ice cream often relies on whipped cream as its base, which already contains air. Additionally, sweetened condensed milk is commonly used in these recipes. This ingredient has a high sugar content that lowers the freezing point, allowing the ice cream to firm up without becoming too hard. Furthermore, the condensed milk is cooked down, resulting in reduced water content and fewer potential ice crystals.

At its most basic, no-churn ice cream only requires cream and sweetened condensed milk. However, variations abound depending on personal preferences. For instance, you can easily create a colourful no-churn Halloween ice cream that rivals the quality of traditionally churned varieties.
