When considering a visit to Lake Tahoe or the mountains for skiing, Reno is an excellent base camp due to its proximity – just 45 minutes away from the slopes. In fact, the ski hill lies along the route to the lake. As you explore Reno, be sure to experience the Burning Man Arts, an immersive artistic adventure that I thoroughly enjoyed. Following this, treat yourself to a calorie-dense doughnut ice cream sandwich from Simple Ice Cream Sandwiches – a masterpiece in its own right. With ample opportunities for scenic shots, Reno is an Instagram enthusiast’s paradise.

Rock Climb at Whitney Peak Hotel

For an adrenaline-packed adventure in Reno, look no further than the Whitney Peak Hotel’s rock climbing facility. The venue boasts both indoor and outdoor walls, offering a thrilling experience regardless of the weather. Our expert instructors provided personalized guidance, allowing us to fully appreciate the physical and mental challenge of scaling the walls. As someone who regularly takes helicopter rides, I found the climb to be surprisingly invigorating – the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit was unmatched. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or just looking for a new thrill, Whitney Peak Hotel’s rock climbing experience is an absolute must-try.

North Lake Tahoe left me awestruck, and it should be a must-visit destination when exploring Northern Nevada. The kayaking excursion was an unforgettable experience, despite the freezing water temperature. The crystal-clear lake provided breathtaking views and stunning photography opportunities. I didn’t mind the chilly water at all, considering the scorching Nevada sun. Lake Tahoe’s depth is truly remarkable – it can fit the entire Empire State Building without showing above the surface, a staggering 1,645 feet or 501 meters deep.I had the pleasure of meeting Alison, a fellow adventurer from Vancouver who writes for Explore magazine. Our guide, Tucker, was exceptional, sharing the rich history and showcasing some of the beaches along the way. He mentioned that they offer a 5-day camping and kayaking tour around the entire lake, which sounds like an incredible adventure. I’m definitely considering this experience for my next visit to Northern Nevada. Who’s ready to join me on this adventure?

Hike Tunnel Creek Trail

The Tunnel Creek Trail hike offers a unique experience, with the option to reach Monkey Rock in just 20 minutes. The path is surprisingly easy, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. While the terrain is primarily dirt and uphill, the stunning views from above Lake Tahoe make the effort worthwhile. Not only will you get to see the breathtaking lake from a new perspective, but you’ll also have the opportunity to admire Monkey Rock’s peculiar shape, which has earned its name due to its uncanny resemblance to a monkey’s head.

Virginia City has a unique charm that transports visitors back in time, with its narrow streets lined by vintage saloons and quaint shops. One must-visit attraction is the mining tour, which takes you deep into an old mine to experience the harsh conditions faced by miners in the past. Be prepared for a chilly adventure and dress warmly! The cold temperatures aside, the tour is both fascinating and humbling.Another exciting activity is taking a ride on the historic V&T Railroad train. This nostalgic journey not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape but also provides an opportunity to catch glimpses of wild horses, if you’re lucky. History enthusiasts will delight in listening to tales about the region’s rich past. Finally, don’t miss the chance to step into one of the many dress-up stores and indulge in a fun photo shoot from a bygone era. We had a blast dressing up and capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

Wild Horse Tour in Carson City

A memorable experience for me was the Wild Horse Tour in Carson City, which took us to a remote location deep in the mountains. As we arrived, I was thrilled to find at least 70 wild horses roaming freely, their majesty and beauty leaving an indelible mark on my soul. The encounter was nothing short of magical, allowing me to connect with nature in a way that’s hard to replicate. As if the horses’ grandeur wasn’t enough, we also had the chance to spot some adorable owls, adding to the overall enchantment of the experience. If you’re a horse enthusiast or simply looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Northern Nevada, this tour is an absolute must-visit destination.

The Carson Valley Trail system boasts an impressive array of trails, offering endless opportunities for hiking and exploration. The Discovery Trail sets the stage for a memorable experience, culminating at the 10-mile Sierra Canyon Trail, which in turn leads to the Tahoe Rim Trail. Although we only had time to tackle the 6-mile Discovery Trail, it was an unforgettable journey that took us to a picturesque waterfall, a highlight of our adventure. The well-maintained switchback trail made for an enjoyable and easy hike. Additionally, the trails are also suitable for biking enthusiasts.
