One Day In Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland, is a place where the mere mention of its name evokes images of enchantment and magic. As I stepped off the plane with just a day to spare before my next destination, I was eager to discover if this mystical reputation held true. The moment I set foot in Geneva, I knew I was in for a treat. A stunning lake and the charming Old Town were just a glimpse into the city’s rich history and culture.

However, it didn’t take me long to realize that Geneva is not for the faint of wallet. From indulging in local cuisine to finding affordable accommodations and even hailing an Uber ride, I quickly learned to prioritize my expenses if I wanted to make the most of my time here. Despite this, I was determined to soak up every moment of my layover and explore all that Geneva had to offer.

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva’s serene beauty is undoubtedly one of the main attractions that makes Geneva an irresistible destination. As Europe’s largest alpine lake and home to a staggering 116 public beaches, it’s no wonder that Bains des Pâquis is the go-to spot for both locals and visitors alike during the summer months. The warm waters and ample space to soak up the sun make it the perfect place to unwind. Furthermore, taking advantage of your hotel’s complimentary transport card can add to the convenience of exploring the area. With free travel on buses, boats, trams, and more, you’ll be able to get around effortlessly and take in all that Lake Geneva has to offer.

Jet d’Eau

Standing near the shores of Lake Geneva, you can’t help but be captivated by the majesty of the Jet d’Eau, one of the world’s tallest fountains. What’s fascinating is that this iconic landmark was never originally intended as a fountain at all. In 1886, it served a more practical purpose – releasing excess water pressure from a hydraulic pumping station. However, its sheer beauty and popularity quickly made it an integral part of the cityscape, now sitting proudly in the center of Lake Geneva as a breathtaking backdrop for photos.

Open Air Cinema & Ferris Wheel

As the warm summer months arrive, Lake Geneva transforms into a picturesque paradise. One unique experience is the free open-air cinema set up along the lake’s shores, where you can unwind and mingle with the locals. If you’re planning a trip to this enchanting destination, be sure to check out my travel resources guide for valuable insights.

When visiting during the summer, take a ride on the Ferris Wheel at the Jardin Anglais for an unforgettable 360-degree view of Geneva. Standing 50 meters above ground at its highest point, this vantage offers breathtaking vistas of the city below. To make the most of your stay, consider purchasing a Geneva Pass that grants you discounts to over 50 attractions, providing an affordable way to explore more of what Geneva has to offer.

Brunswick Monument

The Brunswick Monument, erected in 1879, serves as a testament to the life and legacy of Charles II, Duke of Brunswick. In a unique arrangement, he bequeathed his vast fortune to the City of Geneva in exchange for a monument bearing his name. This striking structure is modeled after the renowned Scaliger Tombs in Verona, Italy. I extend my gratitude to Brendan Williams for accompanying me on this photography venture, allowing me to capture its intricate details and majesty.

Old Town

Geneva’s Old Town is an absolute gem, boasting picturesque squares, meandering streets, and an abundance of cultural and historical attractions that make it a must-visit destination. The fourth-century Cathédrale St-Pierre is just one of the many architectural wonders that will leave you in awe. Its neo-classical design provides stunning backdrops for photographs, and I found myself standing still, taking in the sheer magnitude of its beauty.

For a truly unique and breathtaking perspective, head to La Promenade de la Treille, where the tree-lined promenade offers panoramic views of Geneva. The highlight of this scenic spot is the world’s longest bench, stretching an impressive 120 metres, with vistas of the Salève Mountain as far as the eye can see. It’s the perfect place to pause, take a deep breath, and recharge after exploring the historic Old Town.

Where to Stay

When planning a trip, one of the most crucial decisions is choosing the perfect place to stay. For my recent visit to Geneva, I sought accommodations that would put me in the heart of all the action. Swiss Luxury Apartments exceeded my expectations, offering five-star luxury and sophistication right in the city center, mere steps from the iconic Jet d’Eau. With a focus on exceptional service, every need was catered to, allowing me to truly unwind and enjoy my time there.

I’m a fan of Booking.com for finding accommodations, thanks to its wealth of traveler reviews and competitive rates. The option to cancel for free is also a major plus in case plans change. Following a week-long road trip through Slovenia, we were ready to indulge in some luxury after a stint of roughing it in refuge accommodations with limited amenities. Swiss Luxury Apartments’ laundry service was the icing on the cake – it was just what we needed to get ready for our 10-day hike through the Alps.

Geneva’s gastronomic scene is a true delight, offering a diverse array of culinary experiences. From Michelin-starred restaurants to quaint cafes nestled within the Old Town, there’s something for every palate. Among these gems is Miam’s, which stands out for its commitment to accommodating dietary restrictions. As a celiac, I was thrilled to find lactose-free and gluten-free options that rivalled their street food and world cuisine fusion. The menu boasts an impressive range of lactose-free quiche, salads, and even gluten-free chocolate eclairs – a true oasis for those with dietary needs. For a healthier option, Qibi is another standout, offering a variety of vegetarian dishes and to-go options, as well as seating for those who prefer to dine in. When the sun beats down on this charming city, MANU’s gelato shop provides the perfect respite. Their non-dairy options are not only delicious but also a welcome relief from the summer heat. Geneva truly is a one-of-a-kind destination, with its rich history and culture now complemented by a fantastic foodie scene that shines through. While I may have only spent a day exploring this captivating city, I’m already planning my return visit to delve deeper into Switzerland’s beauty and cuisine.
